Despite soil being one of the crucial materials required during construction, it is often the most overlooked. As such, some individuals who are looking to construct a new structure on their land end up opting to skip soil testing in an attempt to cut on their construction costs. Instead of making their overall construction costs cheaper, they end up putting the entire project at risk. This is because soil varies immensely from one region to another. Therefore, it is prudent to know the intrinsic properties of the soil on your individual land before you can decide whether construction would be feasible on the property. So why should you not skip soil testing before embarking on a construction project?

One of the main things tested for when conducting a soil test for construction purposes is to determine the load bearing capacity of that particular soil. Granted, most structures are erected on top of a foundation. However, before the foundation can be laid, the contractors need to know if the soil would be strong enough to withstand the weight of the foundation as well as the building being erected atop of it.

In addition to testing the innate strength of the soil, the soil tests will also determine how the soil will react to different external factors. Some soils may be quite stable and sturdy when they are dry, but become soft and unstable when exposed to moisture. Neglecting to determine how your soil will react to these external factors put your foundation at risk of slipping or being compromised in the event of flooding. By determining the strength of your soil, or lack thereof, the building contractors can make an informed decision of what measures to put in place when constructing on that soil. This will ensure that the structural integrity of your foundation does not become compromised over time.

Another important test conducted during soil analysis is the individual chemical composition of your soil. One thing to note about chemical composition of soil is that it has a propensity to change over time. Since the chemical characteristics may not stay stable on their own, the building contractors would have to figure out a way to ensure that they do not change due to environmental factors. The most common way of doing is by incorporating another chemical compound into the soil to ensure that it remains stable once the foundation and structure have been erected on top of the soil.
